I have been trained by RGMVP to make
organic compost. First we collected rubbish and poured
water over it then added other layers of dung and
rubbish and allowed it rot for a month in a 7 foot high
heap. After that we mixed it well together and the
waited for another month. Now the compost it ready. This
has helped us because when we used chemical fertilisers
like Urea and DAP, the soil did not remain fertile. Now
we don’t have to spend money on DAP and Urea, we make
our own compost which has helped to make the soil more
fertile and the crop is much better. |

We don’t use chemical fertilisers in
our fields; we give our vegetables organic vermi
compost. We have learnt how to make vermi compost
through the samooh. We were given the worms and shown
how to make it. The plants are greener and bigger, don’t
get diseases, the vegetables are tastier. But the vermi
compost is not enough for growing rice and wheat. For
those crops, we use the dry organic compost made from
gobar and rubbish. We save about Rs 400 per gunny bag of
chemical fertiliser. The soil remains strong and does
not weaken as it does with chemical fertilisers. All the
women in my SHG make organic compost at home.
I was also trained in the SRI method of rice growing at
the Jais training centre. We were told how to prepare
the soil, how much water to use, how to use manure and
compost, and the timing when crops should be planted.
This time I plan to use this method. I usually get 8
quintal of rice from this land but now I am hoping for
much more. |

After I received training, I decided to grow wheat with the new method. I prepared the field as I was told and then, using a rope, I marked out 8 inch distances where I planted the seed. This has been a huge saving for me Earlier, I planted 30 kg seed in 1 beegha of land; this time I used only 5 kg of seed in the same land. I got at least 29 stems from each seed while earlier I used to get just four or five, also there are now about 54 grains on each stem as opposed to the 32 earlier. I have also saved by not using urea and dye –I have used only compost. Next season too I plan to plant my crop using the new method. |
